Backend Distributed Systems Engineer

Brian Ocasio.

I build event-driven backends that scale.

Senior engineer with 8+ years designing Kafka-based, cloud-native services for payments, government-scale platforms and guest experiences. Today I lead financial platform modernization for Disney Cruise Line, and I'm the founder and lead engineer of Qbon.

About

Backend engineer for the hard parts.

Portrait of Brian Ocasio

I'm a backend engineer who likes the hard parts: event streams, service boundaries, data migrations and the platforms other teams build on. I've spent 8+ years shipping Java, Kotlin, Spring WebFlux/Boot and NestJS services on AWS and Kubernetes, backed by PostgreSQL and Kafka.

At The Walt Disney Company I'm modernizing the payment and revenue platforms behind Disney Cruise Line. Before that I worked on USCIS E-Verify and myUSCIS, high-traffic government systems where I led an accounts team and an Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migration.

I also lean hard into AI-assisted engineering: spec-driven development with Cursor and Claude Code, agent orchestration, MCP servers and GraphRAG tooling. Outside my day job I founded Qbon and build the JYC Holdings portfolio of products.

  • Event-driven architecture

Kafka producers and consumers, change-data events, and services that react instead of poll.

  • Payments and fintech

Cloud-native financial microservices and a payment platform integrating Apple Pay, PayPal and more.

  • Government-scale platforms

Spring Boot microservices and React micro-frontends for USCIS E-Verify and myUSCIS.

  • AI-assisted engineering

Spec-driven development, agent orchestration, MCP servers and GraphRAG knowledge tooling.
